WASHINGTON – Congressman Mike Bishop (MI-08) today released the following statement regarding the separation of families at the southern border of the United States:

“As a father of three, it is heartbreaking to see children being separated from their parents, and I believe families should stay together while their cases are pending. For too long, hyper-partisanship has thwarted real solutions to fix our broken immigration system,” said Rep. Bishop. “During my time in the House of Representatives I’ve worked closely with my colleagues, as part of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, to support legislation that would address the erosion of our immigration policies. Currently, there are a number of proposals I am considering that would secure the border, end family separations and close loopholes. In particular, we need to increase the number of federal immigration judges, expedite the adjudication of asylum cases, encourage families seeking asylum to enter through ports of entry, and expand support for border detainment facilities. Fixing our immigration system will require Republicans and Democrats to put aside party differences and work together, and I am absolutely committed to finding a solution.”
