WASHINGTON – Congressman Mike Bishop (MI-08) today released the following statement on the omnibus spending measure, which passed the House by a vote of 256-167, and funds the federal government through the end of the current fiscal year.
“The spending measure which passed the House today contains numerous wins for Michiganders. The legislation funds the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, provides resources to combat the invasive Asian carp, and fully funds FRIB at Michigan State University. At the national level, it provides much-needed resources for states to combat the devastating opioid epidemic. It also takes critical steps to restore military readiness and includes the Taylor Force Act (H.R. 1164), of which I am a cosponsor, to suspend U.S. assistance to the Palestinian Authority unless certain conditions are met.
“Further, the omnibus spending bill contains legislation I have championed, the Child Protection Improvements Act, which allows child-serving organizations to access the FBI’s fingerprint-based background check system. The signing of this legislation will go a long way towards ensuring youth-serving organizations across America are hiring the best possible employees and volunteers to work with our children. Additionally, the bill includes important funding and resources for school safety measures from the STOP School Violence Act.
“Despite these clear victories, the process by which these spending measures are being considered is unacceptable. Our government must return to regular order. Last September, I voted for all 12 appropriation bills in the House. I’m extremely disappointed the Senate failed to do their job and filibustered their consideration. We must end the insanity of month-to-month spending bills and provide funding certainty for our nation.”
