National Defense Authorization Act Passes with Bishop Amendment Included
Rep. Bishop spoke on the House floor Friday about his amendment to urge NATO member nations to honor their defense spending commitments. The amendment passed and was included in H.R. 2810 for final passage.
WASHINGTON – On Friday morning, the House passed H.R. 2810, the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2018. Commenting on the bill to support America’s troops and military readiness, Congressman Mike Bishop issued the following statement:
“I’m proud to support our men and women of the military with this legislation today, which includes funding the largest troop pay raise in eight years. There is no doubt we are safer because of their service, and I am committed to working with Congress to ensure they have the assistance they need – both at home and abroad – so they can perform to the best of their ability.”
Rep. Bishop also had an amendment (No. 98, en block 6) included in the final bill, specifically calling on NATO member nations to honor their defense spending commitments and step up efforts to secure national and regional security interests.
“With new challenges from an increasingly belligerent Russian state, instability across the Middle East and North Africa, and emerging cybersecurity threats, it is time for all NATO allies to honor their commitments and invest in defense spending,” Rep. Bishop said on the House floor Friday. “In order for NATO to be completely effective, all member nations must meet their GDP commitments for defense spending and investment. This is out of fairness – for our effort to evenly share this responsibility, and fairness to American taxpayers.”
