Congressman Mike Bishop Selected for House Ways and Means Committee
WASHINGTON – Congressman Mike Bishop (MI-08) was selected today by the House Republican Steering Committee to serve on the Committee on Ways and Means in the 115th Congress, filling the open seat left by newly-confirmed Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. Ways and Means is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives and has jurisdiction over issues including health care, trade, Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security and welfare.
“I am grateful for this opportunity to fight for Michigan on the House Ways and Means Committee,” said Bishop. “Our state is home to one of the most diverse economies in the nation, and that includes our pivotal role in international trade. We have a real opportunity this Congress to grow our economy and help families get ahead – just as we did in the Comeback State. I am ready to get to work with Chairman Brady and the Committee to simplify our tax code, create more jobs and replace Obamacare with a health care law that works for more hardworking Americans."
Bishop was welcomed to the Committee by Chairman Kevin Brady:
“I’m thrilled to welcome Mike as the newest Republican Member of our Committee. After serving in his state legislature for over a decade, Mike came to Congress to continue serving the workers, families, students, and small business owners of Michigan. He is a fantastic addition to our team because he works hard, understands our issues, and is committed to solving real problems. As our Committee moves forward with our pro-growth agenda, I look forward to having Mike’s valuable perspective on issues that affect the lives of his constituents in the 8th district of Michigan and all Americans.”
Michigan has not had Republican representation on the Ways and Means Committee since former Chairman Dave Camp retired at the end of the 113th Congress. Former Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (MI-06) also congratulated Bishop:
“As a member of the Steering Committee, I want to congratulate my friend Mike Bishop on his new assignment to the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means. Mike will now have a key role in the efforts to make our tax code fairer and simpler. I know Mike will work hard to put the interests of Michigan families and businesses first.”
