Providing for the common defense of our country is the core function of the Federal Government. Since the founding of our nation, millions of Americans have proudly served and sacrificed in preservation of our democracy. It is our duty as a nation to ensure that when our service members return home, that they are properly and respectfully cared for. I am very disappointed by a number of high-profile scandals at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that do a disservice to our heroes and to VA employees that faithfully serve our veterans. Those who have valiantly served our nation deserve better. As your representative in Congress, I will work with my colleagues to advance legislation that supports our military on and off the battlefield, in addition to providing quality services for our veterans who have given so much to protect us at home and abroad.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency- identify and break down barriers veterans face in employment, education, health care and quality of life, making Michigan a great place for veterans and their families to call home. The agency aggregates veterans services currently found in 14 state agencies as well as hundreds of community-based veteran programs to create a ‘no wrong door’ access to benefits and services.

  • Homes for Veterans and their Spouses- the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans and the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette provide eligible veterans and their spouse’s skilled nursing, dementia, special needs or domiciliary care in safe, caring environments.

  • VCAT (Veterans Community Action Team) - VCATs provide no wrong door for veterans. VCAT membership is comprised of federal, state, local and faith-based organizations that support veterans in the communities where they live and work. VCATs focus on identifying solutions for gaps in veteran services, reducing duplication of efforts and simplifying connections with local resources. This community-based system of care allows networks of service providers to employ best practices, share information and tools and connect more quickly with veterans.
